Downton: The Grand Finale Spoilers,
From previews found on Barnes and Noble
Tumblr media
(First things first, Edith in stripes! Edith in stripes! Sorry, I just adore stripes, so I love this look on Edith.)
Tumblr media
So it seems like the big drama with Harold and money is going to revolve around there no longer being money to repair some cottages, and turn a library into a music room to honour Violet and Martha (who is now confirmed to be dead).
Tumblr media
I always suspected that the selling Downton hints in the trailer were misdirection, and as the family is considering a sentimental (as opposed to practical) measure like making a music room, it suggests that the family, although banking on Cora's family's money, does not start of in grave financial peril
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mary is given a particularly bold and confident look for a very exclusive ball, which she wears unaware that her world is about to come "crashing down", so it seems like this happens in the early days of her divorce, and she's just beginning to realise what the consequences are.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mary will buy that dress while on a shopping trip with Edith. Will never say no to a shipping montage. Will be fun to see these two out shopping together. We saw they were already on good terms by last movie (Edith helped Mary with initial negotiations over the film). I wouldn't be surprised if this is the opening sequence. Mary and Edith swanning about shops, looking glamorous, feels like a fun way of opening things. Then that tea shot will be used for exposition. That's my betting anyway.
Tumblr media
I called it that the hostess is hurrying Mary out of the room because there is royalty on the way. There's no way Mary's divorcee status wouldn't otherwise be known, and the hostess would have known Mary was present until now, so the arrival of royalty makes sense for the hostess trying to hastily get her out of the way.
We've got confirmation that Henry had an affair, which I suspected it must be, as adultery was really the only way of getting a divorce back then, and it was Mary filing for divorce. It'll be interesting to see if Henry still wanted to stay with Mary or not.
I'm very interested in that line about Henry "hiring and naming someone else in court", does that mean he hired someone to pretend to be his affair partner? I hope this means we get a look at the legal technicalities of getting divorced back then.
Tumblr media
The winning back the county through "special guests" makes me believe they use their celebrity ties through Thomas and Guy to have a celebrity party. This will be the dinner party we see at the beginning of the trailer, where Robert does the toast for Mary. We see Mary and Edith wearing the same dresses at that dinner, later on as they're clapping Guy and random hot guy (who was making eyes at Mary because of course she would have another love interest) playing piano (Thomas is at that party too). So I think that the social scandal in Yorkshire will be resolved that way.
Tumblr media
Going downstairs, we've also got confirmation that Mrs Patmore and Daisy are separating.
Tumblr media
My bet is that Daisy will be taking over the kitchens, while Mrs Patmore retires to her Bed and Breakfast with Mr Mason.
Tumblr media
There's going to be Ascot drama, which will be fun! I speculated early on that Mary's exclusion from the Royal enclosure will be brought up, and some sharp eyed fans noticed that everyone except Mary is wearing name tags for the Royal Enclosure (including Tom, which is...something)
Tumblr media
A big cheer for Bertie, who has arranged a lunch for the Granthams in White's Marquee, where Mary is watching the race. Lovely, lovely Bertie, sorting out lunch for everyone. I'm expecting (demanding) some close ups of the food.
Here we get plot hints for Tom and Edith! Yay! I wasn't really expecting them to have a "plot", so much as just watching them react to the drama going on with Downton while generally vibing. Edith having a "showdown" with a "trickster", new character Gus Sambrook, sounds fun, and Tom meets an old friend. The reference to America makes me think this friend is someone he knew when he was in Boston with Sybbie. Whoever this Gus is, it sounds like he is seeking introductions at the race. I don't know how much screentime this plotline will have, but if Edith is to have a specific reasons for being the one to have a showdown, then it might be because she and Bertie, as the Marquess and Marchioness, might be particular targets of his. I hope Edith gets to have fun with her showdown, and I'm looking forward to Tom meeting an old pal. I also hope that the business Tom shared with Henry gets brought up, so it isn't entirely forgotten. Considering Henry has been travelling, Tom will have been the one running it anyway.
Tumblr media
And the movie will end with Robert and Cora moving to the Dower House, where Violet used to live. I'm sure that Robert will have bittersweet feelings about this, and that Hugh will bring all the pathos.

I'm realizing only now I never finished watching S6 of Downton Abbey 😱
A few notes/questions:
-When Tom came back from America to be the agent again, did he realize he was going to have to manage Mary / hold the family together?
-The car crash with everyone running to help. I was IMPRESSED at Cora's grip on Robert 😂 "You're not going anywhere". I don't know if it was said grip, or the clenched teeth but I could hear the "Yes dear" in his gaze 😂😂
-Never thought I'd actually end up liking Thomas Barrow but here we are
-Cora's so upset at Violet's cold shoulder. Our girl has worked for something like 30 years at this relationship, and here we are, poor thing.
-I want to be mad at Violet but *sobs* 😭 and also who can stay mad at a character that delivers line like "Your feelings do you credit my dear but you must never let tenderness be a barrier to a bit of snooping". And "Don't be mysterious, it's the last resort of people with no secrets" 😂😂😂😂
-okayyyyy I've excused Mary Crawley's behaviour in the past because her eyerolls are brilliant honestly. But Edith and Tom have a point. It's not cute anymore, hasn't been for a long time. Lucky she took great care of Anna. (And thankfully the Bateses are okay dear lord).
-The family going to Mrs Patmore's 'place of illrepute' 😂😂 they laugh but they support her ❤️ (for all the times Mrs Hughes or Daisy comment on how the downstairs people live through the family, the family gets so heavily involved with downstairs just as much 😂

downton downstairs and how they eat their toast:
carson: lightly toasted with a very thin layer of butter on top. look me in the eye and tell me he'd like it done any other way.
mrs hughes: not the biggest fan of toast. prefers scones, but when she absolutely has to eat it, she likes it toasted with jam only. she is eventually influenced by mr carson and puts minimal butter before she slathers it in strawberry jam.
mrs patmore: toast connoisseur; she has to be the one to crisp the bread and will not eat it otherwise. butter and preserves are the way to go. in a modern context she is a marmite lover; not a huge fan of crusts though
thomas: eats it plain with absolutely nothing on it. will put parsley butter if available though (but it never is so the mystery of whether thomas actually puts condiments on his toast remains very much intact). avid marmalade hater.
o'brien: would be gluten-free in a modern context. does not enjoy toast. don't even think about giving her some she will bite your hand off
william: he likes english muffins. if forced to eat toast he nibbles at it until it vaguely resembles an English muffin.
gwen: cuts the crusts off her bread and gets the most bombastic side eye from mrs p. liker of marmalade and heckler of daisy's anti-marmalade stance
anna: does not toast her bread and likes a thin layer of jam, so long as it doesn't overpower that taste that makes bread, well, bread. likes scones more but isn't excessively picky about it. will occasionally pop scrambled eggs onto her toast, and gets mr bates into it.
mr bates: toasts his bread, and puts butter and jam in even quantities. apparently he is a liker of marmalade, but this was only said in response to thomas' denouncement of it at the table. does he actually enjoy it? we'll never know. crust enjoyed. as mentioned above he puts scrambled eggs on his toast every once in a while.
daisy: very particular about how it's done. she wants untoasted bread, lots of butter, and lots of jam, but not too much of either condiment or it'll make her sick. she despises marmalade and would actually cry as a child if someone forced her to eat it. always eats her crusts, and will eat toast as a midnight snack. she's clearly a fan.
ivy: no crusts, no toasting, no butter, and just puts jam. fights with daisy sometimes about their stances on how toast is supposed to be enjoyed. eventually caves and starts toasting it.
alfred: did not inherit his aunt's genes and is a huge fan of bread. he will literally talk to you for hours about baking bread and how much butter is too much butter. will literally not shut up about toast. eats it with what he believes is the golden ratio of butter (it isn't).
jimmy: likes it a little burnt. that's it he has no other preferences
ms baxter: anna got her scrambled egg thing from her. ms baxter is the original inventor of scrambled eggs on toast actually she patented the term
mr molesley: huge toast enjoyer. initially very adamant that it should be eaten with just butter but changes his ways after ms baxter comes into his life <3

The Downton Abbey Empathy Challenge
"The Little Book of Lykke: The Danish Search for the World's Happiest People" (alternately subtitled "Secrets of the World's Happiest People") offers up the following challenge for strengthening your empathy muscles:
Watch your child's favourite movie, only with the sound turned off. Pay attention to the emotions on the character's faces and discuss why they might feel like that.
This reminded me of my old analysis of the breakfast scene in DA S6, E8 where I stopped and actually looked at what was going on with all of the characters - particularly Mary - and attempted to do some real worl analysis of what was going on. Needless to say, this wasn't popular - in fact all but two of the comments were people telling me exactly where my basic intelligence and observational skills fell blatantly short - and I eventually deleted it because I got tired of coming home from a long day of work and blocking people. However, there was one of the early responses that really stuck in my head and comes out now. It read "The look on Mary's face says everything."
The look on Mary's face says everything.
I don't think that statement is actually wrong. However, one character does not make up a story. I think in order to understand what Mary's face is saying, we need to look at the other faces in the room. All of them. And I don't think we can pick just one key moment to say what the faces are telling us. I think we need to watch the whole scene.
So, since empathy and the need for empathy is something I hear about a lot lately, but only really see demonstrated toward certain, popular, PC groups, I propose an empathy challenge. It's multi part, but you don't need to do all of the parts if you don't want to. Do the ones you have time for, just remember - the point is to build empathy, not confirm bias. If you're doing these just to prove to yourself that the characters you like are Good and Nice and the ones you don't like are Bad and Nasty, you're doing it wrong.
Ready?
Here goes.
Part One: Watch the breakfast scene from S6 E8 with the sound off. Pay attention to the characters' faces. All of them. Even Robert, even though he's there for under a full minute. As objectively as possible, try to determine what the characters are feeling and why. If you have difficulty doing this as an objective exercise, repeat it a time or two. Part Two: Watch an entire episode with the sound off. Pay attention to all of the characters' faces, but pay closer attention to the characters you don't like than the ones you do. Again, as objectively as possible, figure out what they are feeling and why they are feeling it. Part Three - Extra Credit for Writers: Try to write something sympathetic from the PoV of a character you don't like. A drabble, a scene, a novel, length doesn't matter, just really try to get into their head and try to understand them.
And remember - empathy is more than thinking about how you would feel if you were in the same situation as a character, because you are not actually that character, and therefore you wouldn't feel the same. You have to take into account who they are, to understand how they work, and why. It takes effort, and the less you have in common, the more effort it takes.
